EVEN THOUGH TRAINING IS ON A MONDAY, IT’S ALL ABOUT HOW I PREPARE ON A SUNDAY.

For the British fighter, approaching the day bright and early and feeling good is very important. So sleeping well, and taking the right steps the day before—Joshua says—is key to preparing both mind and body for training. Once in the gym, he starts with simple exercises like fingertip push ups to help avoid ligament damage, and anything that helps strengthen the neck—very important for those who, like him, are going to be taking impact.

Finding the right rhythm and flow can determine a match, which is why shadowboxing is a part of all of Joshua’s training sessions. With no opponent and no coach to tell him what to do, boxing with his shadow is how he forms creative pathways—a way to flow himself and build his own creative rhythm. He calls it “a lost art”, and the best way to become a more creative and fluid boxer.

“This is where the real work starts”, Joshua says. And for him, it’s all about mental conditioning. With no mirror around to analyze himself, it’s just him and his coach. Together, they make sure everything he’s done before transitions in, hand in hand, to create the final performance. For this section of his training, his music transitions with him towards what Joshua calls “boxing anthems”—songs that relate to what he’s going through‚ and that are very relevant to what it takes to be a boxer.
