AN HOMAGE TO THE NBA, CHICAGO, AND MUSIC

It’s an idyllic, warm afternoon in Los Angeles. Don C walks into his downtown studio—a loft lined with jersey-laden clothing racks and mountains of boxes. Across the white desk in the center of the room lie prototypes and swatches from his Just Don / Beats collaboration. Here, he tells us about his inspiration.

The music exec turned streetwear designer was just 11 years old when the NBA All-Star weekend last came to his hometown of Chicago. It was a marvel. Players walking the streets in decadent furs, the Chicago stadium filled with musicians, filmmakers, athletes—all just a handful of miles away from his living room.

Those images in the newspaper and on the tv screen STILL jar in my memory banks.

He grabs the starry band of one of his headphones. Both designs—one for Powerbeats Pro and one for Beats Studio3 Wireless—incorporate the six-point star from the Chicago flag, the deep blues and stars of the Windy City skyline, and the Just Don Sounds motifs featured on some of his most defining pieces. The collection is housed in a hollowed-out basketball, gently tucked into a bag modeled after the 1988 NBA All-Star game jerseys. “I wanted to draw inspiration from what Chicago meant at that point in time”, says Don C, “and how we can bring some kind of modern flip to it”.

It’s not unfamiliar territory for a Chicago native to celebrate their city. But Don C is one of the most adamant Chicagoans in the scene, celebrating his roots in many of his biggest projects—and this is no different. “The level of talent that comes from the city is unprecedented”, he says, paying homage to the humble midwestern and southern influences that shape them. “We’re not too puffed up with pride… We have a humble approach to everything we deliver”.

Don C approaches fashion design as if he were designing for a sports league, going as far as to create fictitious teams to design looks around. “I wanted to deliver products that could be appreciated by people from the sports community”, he says, “but that could also be respected and appreciated by people from the style community”.

His eyes light up.

“I love living at the intersection of sports, music, and fashion”.
